Operating Philosophy
Koru operates from a “dual bottom line” flywheel philosophy. We believe that investing in people & relationships, including through leadership development to maximize growth mindsets and inward understanding, drives improved business outcomes and investment returns.
And if we are wrong, we can live with that knowing we are doing our best to improve the lives of the people we work with and their families. Because the opportunity to shepherd small businesses is a great privilege and responsibility, above all else (including our investment returns).
We believe building and maintaining a best-in-class culture is the hardest thing to do in business and seek to identify companies and teams that are leaders in doing so. Positivity compounds.
Feedback is a gift. We create space for it and are grateful for it. We expect the same from our portfolio company partnerships.
Our Core Values
Growth Mindset
Life is about learning. It’s a process. Markets change and people change. Those who are open minded and adapt will win. We get a little better every day.
Sustained Grit
We dive for every loose ball and live for winning the hustle plays that don’t show up on the stat sheet. We also know to give our team the best chance to win at the end of the fourth quarter, we may need to ride the bench a few times throughout the game (whether we like it or not).
Transparency
We seek to simplify and ensure aligned communication. We eliminate the “black box” in M&A.
What is “Koru”?
A “koru” is the unfurling frond of a silver fern tree native to New Zealand.
Deeply rooted in Māori culture, the koru symbolizes growth, renewal,
and new beginnings.
Perpetual movement
Circular shape conveys the importance of maintaining a growth mindset.
Recognition of the origin
Inward coil signifies deep appreciation of our roots
& the people and experiences that make us who we are.
